Moving Livingston County Forward
From the Press and Argus
What steps should the county take to deal with its declining tax revenues?
We are in need of initiative, leadership, and transparency at the county level to address declining revenue streams. I believe that we must start thinking outside the box to address the growing financial issues within the county. First, we need to examine our revenue streams and think about how we can court new businesses to coming into Livingston County. Second, we need to make sure that we are supporting initiatives and issues that sustain and develop a long term infrastructure supporting economic growth and prosperity. Finally, we cannot afford to Continue to rest on the laurels of yesterday because we already have several services that are in need and infrastructure that is not being maintained or supported. For example, we have a significant problem with road deterioration that continues to not be openly addressed by the current members of the Board. Not investing in these infrastructure issues will impede growth and cost the tax payer much more in the long run. In addressing these issues, I would propose a stronger relationship with the Chambers of Commerce and Townships to promote new strategies for the future in bringing in businesses and expanding opportunities to bring in additional revenue without raising taxes.
Would you support raising taxes to maintain certain services?
The current elected members of the County Commission stand behind not raising taxes, but they have failed to inform the residents of this county that they are simply passing the buck to the local townships. One way or another the fiscal irresponsibility of our current Board members will cause an increase of taxes and greater burden on the Townships. We are in serious need of real leadership that is open to addressing concerns publicly and working in the best interest of the county, not simply passing the buck and relying on business as usual practices.
What do you think about the steps the county took to address concerns about operations at Animal Control?
There has been a well documented lack of leadership by current Board members in addressing issues inclusive of this particular issue regarding the Animal Cotrol. I feel that it is time that we start to open the door to examining the problems of this county and finding cost efficient and reasonable solutions that are attained through a transparent process.
Should the county revisit its policy on backing bonds for sewer and water improvements in the townships?
I think in times of economic hardship all policies and processes need to be reassessed. I feel that the current members of the County Board have failed to be transparent in their actions, their processes, and ultimately with the funds of the tax payers. It is completely irresponsible to continue to act in manner behind closed doors and without appropriately and openly addressing all issues.
